About Myself
My academic journey is rooted in a deep curiosity about the intersections of trauma, belief, and identity.
I am currently completing a Master of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School. My research centers on the psychological and spiritual aftermath of leaving fundamentalist Christianity, with a focus on trauma, meaning-making, and identity reconstruction. With a background in qualitative research and a particular interest in narrative and interview-based methodologies, I’m committed to exploring stories that often go unheard in traditional academic spaces.
Before turning toward psychology and theology, I spent years working as an artist and performer in Musical Theater, performing across genres and collaborating with a range of musicians, composers, and theater-makers. This artistic foundation continues to shape how I approach both research and teaching: with imagination, empathy, and attention to voice—both literal and metaphorical.
As a teacher, I’ve worked across diverse settings: from urban K–8 music classrooms to private voice studios and early childhood music programs. I’m passionate about creating learning environments that are inclusive, trauma-informed, and student-centered. Whether I’m guiding a child through their first song or mentoring an adult through the early stages of discovering their vocal potential, I aim to foster curiosity, confidence, autonomy, and a sense of belonging.
The Religious Trauma Verbatim Project
Carrying on the Carthage Verbatim Theatre Legacy, Leah Gawel and her team at Carthage College investigated the lived experience of religious trauma and the spectrum of ways it manifested in those people’s lives. Culminating from 18 semi-structured interviews, Broken Covenant: Stories of Religious Trauma embarks on a mission to platform stories of harm and healing from religion, demonstrating the power of ethnodrama to disseminate qualitative research to bring about societal change.
A first read of Broken Covenant was presented at Carthage College on August 22, 2024 with a script that included 12 of the 18 interviews. Leah plans on continuing development on this piece and presenting a final draft as her Master of Divinity Capstone at Harvard Divinity School.
